Why Score Requirements Matter More Than You Think
You’ve spent months preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. You’ve hit your target score. And then you discover that Canada needs a 6.5 in each IELTS band, Australia needs different scores for different visa subclasses, and the UK has just changed its requirements again.
The same score that gets you into a university in one country might not qualify you for a work visa in another. And the differences aren’t always obvious — a country might accept IELTS but not PTE, or require different scores for skilled workers versus students.
This guide maps out the exact English test score requirements for the most popular immigration destinations, so you can plan your preparation around the right target from day one.
Score Equivalency: Quick Reference
Before diving into country-specific requirements, here’s how the major test scores roughly align. For a detailed breakdown of each test’s format and preparation strategy, see our IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE comparison guide.
| CEFR Level | IELTS | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B1 | 4.0–5.0 | 42–71 | 36–50 | 75–90 |
| B2 | 5.5–6.5 | 72–94 | 51–67 | 95–115 |
| C1 | 7.0–8.0 | 95–113 | 68–84 | 120–140 |
| C2 | 8.5–9.0 | 114–120 | 85–90 | 145–160 |
Important: These are approximate equivalencies. Each country and institution sets its own score thresholds, and they don’t always align perfectly with CEFR levels. Always check the specific requirements for your visa or program.
Canada
Express Entry (Skilled Immigration)
Canada uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) system. For Express Entry, you need minimum CLB 7 in all four skills for the Federal Skilled Worker program.
| CLB Level | IELTS General (L/R/W/S) | PTE Core | CELPIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 7 (minimum for FSW) | 6.0/6.0/6.0/6.0 | 50 each | 7 each |
| CLB 9 (competitive score) | 8.0/7.0/7.0/7.0 | 73/60/60/68 | 9 each |
Higher CLB scores earn significantly more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 can be 40+ CRS points — often the difference between receiving an invitation to apply or waiting another round.
Accepted tests: IELTS General Training (not Academic), CELPIP General, PTE Core (as of 2024). TOEFL is not accepted for immigration. For detailed IELTS speaking preparation tips, see our dedicated guide.
Canadian University Admission
Most universities require IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 86–100, or PTE Academic 60–65. Competitive programs (MBA, law, medicine) often require IELTS 7.0+ or TOEFL 100+.
Australia
Skilled Migration (Points-Based Visas)
Australia uses a points system where English proficiency contributes significantly. The scoring tiers:
| English Level | Points | IELTS (each band) | PTE (each section) | TOEFL iBT (L/R/W/S) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 0 | 6.0 | 50 | 12/13/21/18 |
| Proficient | 10 | 7.0 | 65 | 24/24/27/23 |
| Superior | 20 | 8.0 | 79 | 28/29/30/26 |
The jump from Competent (0 points) to Superior (20 points) can dramatically change your visa outcome. Many applicants find that PTE Academic gives them a better chance at achieving Superior scores due to the computer-based scoring system.
Accepted tests: IELTS (Academic or General), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Duolingo English Test is generally not accepted for Australian immigration.
Australian University Admission
Standard requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), PTE Academic 58, or TOEFL iBT 79. Health sciences and education programs typically require IELTS 7.0 (7.0 in each band) or PTE Academic 65.
United Kingdom
Skilled Worker Visa
The UK requires a minimum CEFR B1 level for most Skilled Worker visas. The UK has its own list of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs).
Accepted SELTs for visa applications: IELTS for UKVI (a specific version of IELTS), Trinity College London ISE, LanguageCert, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI. Standard IELTS, TOEFL, and regular PTE are not accepted for UK visa applications — you must take the “for UKVI” version.
| Visa Type | Minimum Level | IELTS for UKVI Score |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker | B1 | 4.0 in each component |
| Health & Care Worker | B1 | 4.0 in each component |
| Global Talent | No requirement | N/A |
| Student Visa (below degree) | B1 | 4.0 in each component |
| Student Visa (degree+) | B2 | 5.5 in each component |
UK University Admission
Universities set their own requirements, typically: IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 80–100, PTE Academic 55–70. Russell Group universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL) generally require IELTS 7.0–7.5 or equivalent.
United States
Immigration
The US does not have a standard English test requirement for most immigration visas. English ability is assessed during the citizenship interview (basic conversational English) but no specific test score is mandated for work visas (H-1B, L-1, etc.).
University Admission
This is where US requirements matter most:
| University Tier | TOEFL iBT | IELTS Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 20 (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT) | 100–110+ | 7.0–7.5+ | 120–135+ |
| Top 50 | 90–100 | 6.5–7.0 | 110–120 |
| Top 100 | 79–90 | 6.0–6.5 | 100–110 |
| Community Colleges | 61–79 | 5.5–6.0 | 85–100 |
The US is the largest market for the Duolingo English Test, with over 4,500 institutions now accepting it. If cost or test center access is a concern, Duolingo is a legitimate option for US university applications.
Accepted tests: TOEFL iBT (the traditional favorite), IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test (increasingly accepted). Each university has its own policy — always verify on the admissions page.
Germany (English-Taught Programs)
While most German university programs are taught in German (requiring German language certificates), an increasing number of master’s programs are offered in English, especially in engineering, business, and computer science.
Typical requirements for English-taught programs: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5, TOEFL iBT 80–92, or PTE Academic 56–62. Some programs also accept Duolingo English Test scores of 105–115.
For programs taught in German, you’ll need a German certificate instead — see our guide on how to choose the right German certificate.
New Zealand
Skilled Migrant Category
New Zealand requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall (or equivalent) for the Skilled Migrant Category residence visa. For occupations requiring registration (teachers, nurses, electricians), specific band scores may apply.
Accepted tests: IELTS (Academic or General), TOEFL iBT (minimum 79), PTE Academic (minimum 58), Cambridge C1 Advanced (minimum 176). The Duolingo English Test is not currently accepted for New Zealand immigration.
Ireland
Employment Permits
Ireland does not have a formal English test requirement for most work permits, but employers may require proof of English proficiency. For Stamp 4 (long-term residency), English ability may be assessed informally.
University Admission
Irish universities typically require IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5, TOEFL iBT 80–90, or PTE Academic 56–62. Trinity College Dublin and UCD tend toward the higher end of these ranges.
How to Choose the Right Test for Your Country
Going to Canada? IELTS General Training is the safe choice for immigration. For university, IELTS Academic or TOEFL both work.
Going to Australia? PTE Academic is increasingly popular due to faster results and computer-friendly scoring. IELTS remains the most widely accepted.
Going to the UK? You must take IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT. Standard IELTS won’t work for visa applications.
Going to the US? TOEFL is the traditional choice. Duolingo is the budget-friendly alternative with growing acceptance.
