Is the Duolingo English Test Worth It? A Realistic Guide for 2026

Duolingo English Test online exam interface and preparation guide for 2026

The Duolingo English Test (DET) went from "what even is that?" to "accepted by 5,000+ universities" in about four years. During COVID, when IELTS and TOEFL test centres shut down, DET stepped in as the test you could take from your bedroom. The pandemic ended, but DET's growth didn't.

But here's the question Indian test-takers keep asking: is DET a legitimate alternative, or is it the "discount" English test? The honest answer is somewhere in between.

What Makes DET Different

It's adaptive. Unlike IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE where everyone gets the same questions, DET adapts in real-time. If you answer correctly, the next question gets harder. This means the test "finds" your level faster — which is why it's only about 1 hour long.

It's taken at home. You need a computer with camera, microphone, and stable internet. No test centres. No commute.

It costs US$65 (~₹5,400). Less than half the cost of IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.

Results come in 48 hours. Comparable to PTE. Much faster than IELTS.

The Test Format

Adaptive Section (~45 minutes)

Read and Complete: You see a sentence with missing letters and type the complete words. Tests vocabulary, spelling, and reading speed.

Read and Select: You identify which words from a list are real English words (some are made up). Tests vocabulary breadth.

Listen and Type: You hear a sentence and type exactly what you heard. Tests listening comprehension and spelling.

Read Aloud: You read a sentence out loud. The AI evaluates pronunciation and fluency.

Write About the Photo: You see an image and write at least one sentence describing it. 1 minute.

Speak About the Photo: Same concept but speaking for 90 seconds.

Extended Section (~10 minutes)

Writing Sample: Respond to a prompt in writing (3-5 minutes).

Speaking Sample: Respond to a prompt verbally (1-3 minutes).

Interactive Reading and Listening: Blended reading and listening comprehension questions.

DET Scoring Explained

DET scores range from 10-160. Most universities require between 100-130. Approximate equivalencies:

DETIELTSTOEFL iBTTypical Requirement
85-905.546-59Foundation programs
100-1056.060-78Undergraduate admission
110-1156.579-93Most postgraduate
120-1257.094-101Competitive programs
135+7.5+102+Top-tier programs

DET also gives sub-scores in four areas: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production.

Where DET Falls Short

Immigration: no. Canada's Express Entry, Australian immigration, and UK visa applications don't accept DET. If you need English proof for immigration, you need IELTS or PTE.

Some universities still don't accept it. While 5,000+ institutions accept DET, some elite programs still only accept IELTS or TOEFL. Always check.

The at-home format can be tricky. You can't look away from the screen, can't have anyone else in the room, and your ears must be visible. If your internet drops, you may need to retake.

Limited recognition in employment contexts. Employers who require English proficiency typically ask for IELTS or TOEFL.

Preparation Strategy

Take the free practice test first. Duolingo offers a free 15-minute practice test on their website. Take it before you prepare for anything.

Build vocabulary breadth, not depth. The "Read and Select" task tests whether you can distinguish real English words from fake ones. Read widely — news articles, science magazines, book reviews.

Practice typing speed. Several DET tasks have tight time limits and require typing. Aim for at least 40 words per minute.

For speaking tasks: Practice describing images out loud. Open Google Images, find a random photo, set a timer for 90 seconds, and describe everything you see. An AI speaking tool like Langmitra can help you build fluency and catch pronunciation issues.

For "Read and Complete": The best preparation is extensive reading — the more words you've seen in context, the faster you'll recognize them from fragments.

Test Day Tips

Set up your space properly. Clean desk. Good lighting. Quiet room. Close all other applications. Disable notifications.

Use Chrome. Run the equipment check 24 hours before your test.

Don't look away from the screen. The AI proctor flags this as suspicious behaviour.

Speak clearly, not loudly. Normal conversational volume is fine.

Should You Take DET?

Take DET if: your target university accepts it, you're applying only for university admission (not immigration), you want to save money, and you prefer testing from home.

Don't take DET if: you also need an English score for visa/immigration purposes, your target institution doesn't accept it, or you perform better in structured multi-hour exams.

Many students take DET for some applications and IELTS/TOEFL for others. The scores are sent directly to universities, and sending to additional institutions costs only US$20.
