There is no such thing as a DSH past paper, and the reason is more useful than the disappointment. The DSH is not one exam. Every university writes, sets and marks its own, inside a common framework agreed by the German Rectors' Conference. Two DSH papers from two universities can differ in text length, task types and how the oral exam is run, while certifying exactly the same level.
So the question to ask is not where the DSH past papers are. It is where your university's Musterprüfung is, and what to do with everyone else's. Both have answers, and the material is free.
Why there is no central paper
The framework is the Rahmenordnung über Deutsche Sprachprüfungen für das Studium an deutschen Hochschulen, and it fixes what the exam must contain and what the grades mean. It does not fix the paper. Each institution accredits its own DSH against that framework and then runs it.
This has one consequence worth absorbing before you download anything: a sample exam from another university tells you about the DSH in general, not about the exam you will sit. Useful for volume, misleading for format. The aggregator sites also carry a warning worth repeating, which is that some of the examples circulating were written under earlier examination regulations and no longer match the current ones.
Where the sample exams actually are
Your own university first. The institution you are applying to almost always publishes its own Musterprüfung, because it is in their interest that candidates turn up knowing the format. Look on the language centre or Sprachenzentrum pages rather than the admissions pages. This is the single highest-value thing on this list and the one most candidates skip in favour of a general search.
The two aggregators. The official DSH site at dsh.de keeps a Beispiele section collecting current and past sample exams from a long list of universities, broken down by section. A second site, dsh-information.de, maintains a comparable table, in places with the listening audio attached. Between them they cover something like thirty institutions, among them Duisburg-Essen, the two Berlin universities, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Kassel, Münster, Göttingen, Freiburg, Mainz, Mannheim, Greifswald, LMU Munich, Bonn, Halle, TU Dortmund and TU Braunschweig.
Coverage is uneven. Some universities publish a complete set with solutions and audio; others publish only the reading section; a few publish nothing at all, and at least one states plainly that its examples are not publicly available.
What to be careful with. Sites selling DSH preparation packs assembled from these same free university PDFs are reselling public files. Check the aggregators before paying for anything.
The structure, and the grading rule that catches people
The written exam has three blocks, and the framework weights them.
| Section | Abbreviation | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Listening comprehension of a lecture-style text | HV | 2 |
| Reading comprehension | LV | 2 |
| Academic language structures | WS | 1 |
| Guided text production | TP | 2 |
Reading and academic language structures are marked together as one combined section. The oral exam is separate: a short presentation on a general academic or socio-political topic, followed by questions on it or on your intended field, typically inside twenty minutes.
Now the part that decides outcomes.
| Result | Requirement |
|---|---|
| DSH-1 | At least 57 per cent in both the written and the oral exam |
| DSH-2 | At least 67 per cent in both |
| DSH-3 | At least 82 per cent in both |
Both parts must reach the threshold, so the weaker one sets your grade. A candidate scoring 85 per cent written and 64 per cent oral does not hold DSH-2. They hold DSH-1, and at most German universities DSH-2 is the level that admits you to almost everything. The oral exam is also the part that cannot be practised from a PDF, which is why it is the one that quietly decides admissions.
This matters more than it sounds because of how candidates allocate time. The written sample papers are downloadable, markable and satisfying. The oral exam requires another person and produces no score. The grading rule is indifferent to which one was more convenient to prepare.

Building a realistic mock
Sit the written blocks together, timed. The written DSH is a long continuous session, and stamina in the third hour is part of what is being measured. Three sections on three evenings tells you whether you know the German; one sitting tells you whether you can still produce it at the end.
Play the listening once. The HV text is lecture-style and carries a weighting of two. Replaying it until you catch everything converts a measurement into a vocabulary exercise.
Treat the WS section as its own subject. Academic language structures — nominalisation, passive and passive alternatives, participial constructions, the whole register of written academic German — is the section with the lowest weighting and the highest density of recoverable marks, because it is pure learnable pattern rather than comprehension.
Rehearse the oral out loud, to a timer, with someone. Prepare a short presentation on a general academic topic, deliver it, and have somebody ask you questions about it afterwards. Doing this three times is worth more than three more written papers once your written work is comfortably above the line.
If the sample exams say you are not ready
Practice material diagnoses; it does not teach. For the structures that cost the most marks in written German, see our guides to cases and der/die/das and German word order, with common beginner mistakes for what examiners flag most. For the text production section specifically, how to improve writing in a foreign language covers why rewriting a corrected piece beats writing a new one.
If you have not finally committed to the DSH, it is worth comparing: the DSH, TestDaF, Goethe and telc comparison covers the choice, and German levels explained sets DSH-2 against TDN 4 and the CEFR bands. The DSH exam guide covers format and preparation in more detail.
One strategic note. TestDaF is centrally set and sat at test centres worldwide, so you can take it before you leave home; the DSH is usually taken at the university itself. If you are applying from abroad and cannot easily reach Germany to sit an exam, that practical difference often matters more than any preference between the two formats.
For the honest timescale, the FSI language difficulty ranking places German in Category II at roughly 900 class hours to professional working proficiency. DSH-2 sits near the upper end of that range.
Frequently asked questions
Are there official DSH past papers?
Not centrally, because there is no central DSH. Each university sets its own exam within a national framework, so what exists is sample exams published by individual universities, collected on dsh.de and dsh-information.de.
Where can I download DSH sample exams for free?
Start with the language centre pages of the university you are applying to, which usually publishes its own Musterprüfung. Then use the two aggregator sites, which between them collect examples from around thirty universities, some with listening audio and solutions.
Is a DSH sample exam from another university useful?
For practice volume, yes. For format, not reliably, because task types and text lengths differ between institutions. Use your own university's material to learn the format and other universities' material to get more reps.
What percentage do I need for DSH-2?
At least 67 per cent, in both the written and the oral exam. DSH-1 requires 57 per cent in both and DSH-3 requires 82 per cent in both.
Can a strong written result make up for a weak oral exam?
No. Both parts have to reach the threshold independently, so the weaker part determines your overall level. This is the most common way candidates end up with DSH-1 when they needed DSH-2.
What are the sections of the written DSH?
Listening comprehension, reading comprehension, academic language structures, and guided text production. Reading and academic language structures are marked together, and the framework weights the four parts 2 : 2 : 1 : 2 respectively.
Which is easier, the DSH or TestDaF?
Neither is reliably easier; they are differently shaped. TestDaF is standardised and reports a level per section, so one weak skill caps your result. The DSH is set locally and has a combined written score, which can absorb one weaker written section, but the oral exam has to clear the threshold on its own.
